Fear and hesitation are natural reactions to the unknown. You hesitate to ask your boss for the raise you believe you deserve, because you’re afraid they’ll say no. You shy away from telling someone you love them for fear the feeling isn’t mutual. You keep both feet planted safely on the ground while your friends try skydiving, because you have a paralyzing fear heights.
Weightlifting is a hugely gratifying sport. It can also be a very discouraging sport. Training is monotonous, frustrating, and forces athletes beyond their comfort zone on a daily basis. With the right mindset, athletes are not discouraged by the soul-crushing nature of training. Instead they learn to use every aspect of training — both positive and negative — to increase their de- termination and desire to succeed.
The documentary The Mask You Live In claims that the phrase, “Be a man,” is the most destructive phrase in our culture. Young boys are taught to toughen up, to not be a sissy, to not be like the girls, to not let them see you cry. We’ve created a culture that makes young boys feel insecure, feel as though they have to prove their masculinity every day.
